2016 Tour of France, Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Germany and Luxembourg
Beginning of May again and like previous years we took the Channel tunnel due to it being less stressful for Cassie. After leaving Calais we stayed for two nights near St. Omer in France before making our way down the eastern side of France to Lake Annecy bordering Switzerland, this would be our first long stay camping site that we so enjoyed two years ago.
Time came to unpitch and travel the long way around via the 'Frejus' tunnel to the Italian lakes, the first being Lake Maggiore and then to Lake Garda, both lakes had their qualities but Lake 'Garda' had it for the surrounding beauty and walking. Our last campsite in Italy was to be on the Adriatic coast near to Venice, with a total of 15 days being spent in Italy
From the Adriatic coast we travelled into Slovenia's western side and into the 'Soca' valley which has a very interesting WW1 history area, but poor weather slightly hindered our outings. After another 5 days we then headed to a favourite location for us at Lake Bled, where the weather improved and we settled down for a week of enjoying the mainly hot weather with the odd overnight thunderstorm thrown in.
Leaving Slovenia for Austria we only had a 4 hour journey to a familiar overnight stay, where we again had the most delicious pizza like last year before setting off for our Innsbruck site, where again we stopped for a week. This site surprised us with its top notch facilities, neatness of the site and the food. Plenty of sightseeing with a visit to Innsbruck, Ambras castle and villages that haven't changed in years plus a few walking trails.
Leaving Austria we headed into Germany and a campsite near to Lake Constance or Bodensee as it is called locally, and during our stay we took a ferry for a day out across the water to Konstanz in Switzerland.
After this we felt we were on the way home, but before that we had a fantastic week in the Black Forest area of Germany where we tasted the real 'gateau', plenty of walking and sightseeing before heading to Luxembourg for 4 nights and back to St.Omer in France.
Nine weeks away this time, nearly 4,000 miles travelled and it went ever so fast so perhaps next year we could extend it even more.
